Welcome to the Essential Guide to GIS.

The aim of this guide is to provide newcomers to the field of GIS with a basic grounding of the principals and technology of Geographical Information Systems.

This guide was orginally produced as a small paperback booklet (still available from GeoInformation International in Cambridge, England) however I have extended the orignal to include a hands-on GIS workshop using downloadable software and data.

I hope to update the guide from time to time, so if you have anything which you feel should be covered in more detail, please contact me.
